Cool Stuff I've Been Doing ... at StyleList

I just got a reminder from the lovely ladies at BlogHer that I've been neglecting this sweet blog. That will never do, but this week I'm super busy with my family visiting to celebrate my 40th birthday month.

Rather than freak out about coming up with a clever post, I thought I'd share where I've been for the past couple of months. Since there is a lot of fun, new stuff, I decided to break it up over a couple of posts.

This first one is about what I've done lately at StyleList, namely a ton of interviews, including:

• Martha Stewart -- and some quotes even got picked up by NY Magazine!
• Madonna's make up artist, Gina Brooke, of Shu Uemura, gorgeous and gracious
• Project Runway's Christian Siriano -- who was a total sweetheart!

• Tom Brokaw -- yes, the real one -- about style and character
• Ali Hewson (Bono's wife!) on "Sustainable Fashion"
• I'm now one degree of separation from Cutest Beatle Paul McCartney, thanks to an interview with his designer daughter, Stella McCartney (also, I disavow the bitchy tone, which came from a very heavy handed editing job) 
• Another hair giant, Sally Hershberger who talked about how to give your hair guts, using her AMAZING new Shagg line
• Albert Kriemler, AKRIS designer, and fine Swiss gentleman
• Naeem Khan, designer of the finale dresses in the movie Dream Girls, and also an amazing gentleman

Bonus post: my BFF Baby and I did a Dior Master Makeup Class at Neiman Marcus and then had delicious drinks while wearing ridiculous amounts of makeup. That's me, covered in bronzer, standing between master makeup artists Becky Watkins, on the left, and Karen Hummel on the right.

we're late getting it up. We'll get to the excuses in a minute. First the administrivia:

Okay, here's the stuff about us. Partly we're late because our whole blog is about random things, and partly because there are three of us to coordinate on a group post like this. Which leads us to random item #1:

There are three of us posting here. A lot of people miss this, perhaps because all of our "names" start with "C" - colleen, cheapgirl and cat. We think we have relatively distinct voices, but obviously we all like the same kinds of things. See our bio page for slightly more information about us here.

Daniel Day-Lewis=Johnny Depp, Only Not Fun

Good GOD! Does this man have even ONE pore without a black hair coming out of it? There is body hair all over his face!

Whew, glad I got that off my chest. Now I can move on to deep thoughts about Daniel Day-Lewis.

Like, is he the best actor ever? Or is he just so full of craft that you want to bop him one on the head and yell, "Lighten up!"

I'm torn.

For the first official wishbone clover interview, we speak with Matthew, who used to be a buyer for our favorite San Francisco emporium of weird, Paxton Gate. When I first interviewed for a job with Knickerbocker, I was unconvinced that corporate life was for me. When I walked into Cat's dimly-lit office, spied her green nailpolish, and chatted about stationery and monkey skulls, I thought I'd fit right in.

Matthew: Is this the interview now?

Me: Yes.

Matthew: Would you like water or cheap beer that isn't refrigerated?

Me: Beer. How did you get a job with Paxton Gate?

Matthew: I was living down in Humboldt, a friend came back from visiting San Francisco and said, "I found this place in San Francisco that looks just like your bedroom. It's called Something Gate." I was working for a place in Humboldt called Something Gate, so I didn't think much of it. Then I was traveling through Uruguay and decided to move to San Francisco. On Tribe, I found a job at Paxton Gate listed under the "bizarre" category. I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it, but they were intelligent hoops.

Me: How long did you work there?

Matthew: 10 months. Hey! I found my fortune! (He pulls out a Mason jar filled with slips of paper from fortune cookies.) In the end, I wanted a life outside of work.

Me: What's the weirdest thing you were ever offered?

Matthew: A film reel of a monkey being tortured. I purchased a still, but I had to get rid of it. I couldn't stand to look at it.

Me: Do you shop there now?

Matthew: No, I've always had an affinity for finding odd things on my own. Which is probably why I worked there. We really got into taxidermy when a retired captain of industry offered us his collection. He had a warehouse of trophies from his safaris.

Me: What's the one thing you wouldn't sell, no matter how much someone offered you?

Matthew: My art. Any of it. That's a heart in a vial. Vertebrae. A preserved duck heart. Some wings.
